Discussion “AI Tools for Biologists: Image and Big Data Analysis – Advantages and Risks” held at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology

30 september, 2025

On September 29, 2025, the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of al-Farabi Kazakh National University  hosted a scientific-practical discussion on the topic “AI Tools for Biologists: Image and Big Data Analysis – Advantages and Risks.”

The event brought together faculty members, deputy heads of departments, and young researchers.

The discussion was moderated by Professor Meruyert Sakenovna Kurmanbayeva, Doctor of Biological Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology.

During the discussion, participants explored the potential applications of modern artificial intelligence (AI) tools in biological research, including the analysis of microscopic images, interpretation of large arrays of genetic and physiological data, and forecasting of ecological changes.

Special attention was given to issues of ethical responsibility, data reliability, and the risks of excessive automation in scientific analysis.

As a result of the discussion, the following conclusions were reached:

  • AI technologies open new horizons for accelerating data processing and interpretation in the biological sciences.
  • It is essential to enhance the competencies of faculty and students in bioinformatics and digital data analysis.
  • The development of an internal ethical policy for the use of AI in scientific research is necessary.
  • It was proposed that the Faculty introduce specialized training modules on the application of AI tools for biologists into both educational programs and research projects.

The discussion took place in a constructive and inspiring atmosphere, demonstrating the strong interest of the KazNU academic community in integrating modern digital technologies into biological science.
