A third-year  PhD student in 8D05112 – Environmental bioengineering  from the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, Department of Biotechnology at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, and a scientific researcher at the Ichthyology Laboratory of the Fisheries Research and Production Center, Pangereyev Berik Syrymbayuly, is currently undergoing a research internship at the Evolutionary Ecology of Hydrobiota Laboratory at the State Scientific Research Center for Nature in Vilnius, Lithuania.

During his internship, Pangereyev Berik Syrymbayuly is conducting genetic research, including species identification of amphipods, DNA sequencing, PCR testing, COI (cytochrome c oxidase gene), DNA extraction methods, and gel electrophoresis. He is also learning species identification methods based on morphological traits, an important tool for better understanding and classifying hydrobiota.

This research is of great significance to science, as complete genetic data on amphipods is still lacking in Kazakhstan, which represents an important gap in the study of these organisms. The work conducted during this internship will help fill this gap by providing valuable data for further research in the fields of ecology and evolutionary biology. The results of this research will have a significant impact on the development of domestic science and strengthen international scientific collaboration.

Future research will focus on a deeper understanding of amphipod ecology and their evolutionary history, which will help uncover the mechanisms of adaptation of these organisms in changing ecosystems and improve ecosystem resilience as a whole.

The internship is supervised by Senior Researcher Denis Copilas-Ciocianu, which contributes to strengthening academic and scientific connections and further development of the scientific work of Pangereyev Berik Syrymbayuly.
