Department of General Medical Practice

The Department of General Medical Practice provides training for undergraduate, internship, and residency students within the framework of the educational program “General Medicine”, offering courses in general medical disciplines such as: • Anesthesiology and Resuscitation with Fundamentals of Toxicology, • Dermatovenereology, • Narcology, • Psychiatry, • Phthisiology, • Neurology, • Neurology and Mental Health, • Pathology of the Nervous System, • Psychiatry and Neurology for Dentistry, • Infectious Diseases, • Fundamentals of Infectology, • Fundamentals of Infectology for Dentistry, • Tropical Diseases. For internship training, the following modules are offered: • Visual and Endoscopic Diagnostics in Surgical Practice, • Emergency Care in Obstetrics, • Mental Health Protection, • Anesthesiology and Resuscitation for Surgery, • Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics, • Geriatrics, • Integrated Management of Childhood Illness, • Neurology at the Primary Health Care Level, • Special Surgical Skills. The training is conducted in three languages: Kazakh (state language), Russian, and English. The faculty members are experts in developing competency-based educational programs, assessment in medical education (AMEE, NBME), as well as in accreditation processes. The main clinical bases of the department include: • City Clinical Hospital No. 1, • City Clinical Hospital No. 7, • City Clinical Infectious Diseases Hospital named after I.S. Zhekenova, • City Polyclinic No. 10, • City Polyclinic No. 26, • Primary Health Care Center of Medeu District, • A-CLINIC ALMATY, • City Emergency Medical Care Hospital, • Central City Clinical Hospital, • City Rheumatology Center, • Karasai Central District Hospital, • Talgar Central District Hospital, and others. Clinical practice constitutes an essential part of the educational process and includes: conducting consultations, participating in case conferences, supervising patients, performing clinical case reviews, ward rounds, participating in clinical and expert work, joint medical conferences, mortality review commissions (as experts), treatment-control commissions for the analysis of fatal cases (as experts), reviewing medical records, and more.

History of the department

Department of General Medical Practice

The Department of General Medical Practice was established in September 2024 on the basis of the Department of Clinical Disciplines by decision No. 1 of the Board of Directors of the NJSC Al-Farabi Kazakh National University dated July 18, 2024.

The department is headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Gaukhar Medeubaevna Kurmanova.

The professors of the department include:

  • Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Kulnar Kazizovna Akanova,
  • Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Korlan Zarlykovna Saduakasova,
  • Associate Professor, Candidate of Medical Sciences Gulziya Nurtazaevna Ismailova,
  • Candidate of Medical Sciences Nazima Zarubekovna Zarubekova.

The total number of faculty members at the department is 85, including 3 PhD doctoral students.

In 2024, 15 articles were published in the Scopus database.

The department also provides training of medical specialists within residency programs in the following educational areas:

  • Adult and Pediatric Neurology,
  • Adult and Pediatric Infectious Diseases,
  • Adult and Pediatric Dermatovenereology,
  • Adult and Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The department conducts research projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
