24 november, 2025

On November 24, 2025, the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted the youth environmental forum “Farabi Green Campus: Clean University” as part of the national campaign “Clean Kazakhstan”. The event marked the start of the first stage of the faculty-level selection of student eco-projects.

The forum aimed to enhance students’ environmental awareness, support student initiatives in the field of green technologies, and promote the principles of sustainable development within the university environment, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

Seven projects were presented in the competition program, each distinguished by relevance, scientific justification, and practical solutions for improving the ecological condition of the campus. According to the evaluation by the expert jury, students from the Department of Chemistry and Technology of Organic Substances, Natural Compounds, and Polymers won 1st and 2nd places:

1st place – Ilyas Amirali with the project “Production of Biodegradable Polymer Films Based on CMC from Recycled Paper Waste”

2nd place – Daniil Shepilov with the project “Disinfection and Conversion of Faculty Basement Rooms into Recreational Spaces for Students”

3rd place – Amirhan Bekmagambetov with the project “Development of a Methodology for Determining Concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds Previously Unmonitored in Kazakhstan”

In addition, three project teams participated in the forum, presenting important ideas for the ecological transformation of the university:

Aidana Tabynbayeva and Aruzhan Slamgozha – “From Waste to Product: Making Cushions and Soft Furniture for the Campus from Textile and Plant Waste”

Artur  Grigoryev, Ignat Ushakov, Mikhail Simonov – “IoT WasteNet: An Intelligent Network of Containers to Optimize Waste Management on Campus”

Ersultan Ermoldanov, Tair Makhsutov – “From Waste to Product: Technology for Processing Fallen Leaves and Grass Collected on Campus into Paper Products”

Holding this forum was an important step in fostering an environmentally responsible mindset among students and advancing the concept of a “green university.” The best projects selected at the faculty level were subsequently presented at the university-wide level.
