Young diplomats took part in the Model UN project
The international conference "The Model of the United Nations - The New Silk Road" was held at the Al–Farabi Kazakh National University.
The event was attended by Rashid Yerishev, Deputy Head of the Representative Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty, Vlastimil Samek, Head of the UN Information Office in Kazakhstan, Dilyara Urmanova, Director of the Ban Ki-moon Institute for Sustainable Development, Alibi Ayapbergenov, President of the KazYouthDiplomacy youth organization, as well as students and experts in the field of international relations.
The Model UN project gives young people the opportunity to better understand the mechanisms of the United Nations, participate in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and model international negotiations. Thousands of young people from all over the world participate in the project every year.
The conference has been held at the university since 2013 and this year was timed to coincide with the 34th anniversary of Kazakhstan's membership in the United Nations. The event became a platform for the development of diplomatic skills, the ability to speak publicly and negotiate. The UNESCO (Education, Science and Culture), ECOSOC (UN Economic and Social Council), ECOFIN (Council on Economic and Financial Affairs) and SPECPOL (Committee on Special Political and Decolonization Issues) committees worked within the framework of the conference.
The participants acted as delegates of the UN member states, represented the official positions of the states and modeled negotiations on key issues on the international agenda.
The event highlighted the university's commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Areas 4, 16, and 17, and demonstrated the importance of youth diplomacy and its role in training future leaders and specialists in international relations. The conference was organized with the support of the consuls of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan and is aimed at strengthening regional cooperation.
