Practical Workshop “Western Blotting: A Step-by-Step Guide” at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics

18 february, 2026

On 17–18 February 2026, a practical workshop entitled “Western Blotting: A Step-by-Step Guide” was held at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. The event was organized by Algimed LLP in partnership with Bio-Rad Laboratories, one of the world’s leading companies in the field of molecular biology.

The workshop focused on modern methods of protein analysis using Western blotting. During the hands-on training session, participants became familiar with the key stages of sample preparation, methods for determining total protein concentration, and performing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE).

Particular interest was generated by the demonstration of rapid, reproducible protein transfer onto membranes using the Trans-Blot Turbo system, as well as by the practical aspects of immunodetection. Special attention was paid to fluorescent protein detection methods, which provide high sensitivity and enable quantitative analysis.

The final stage of the workshop focused on data processing and normalisation using specialised software tools.

The seminar enabled participants to acquire practical skills covering the full Western blotting workflow - from sample preparation to data interpretation. The organisation of such events contributes to the development of professional competencies among students and early-career researchers, the внедрение of modern laboratory technologies, and the strengthening of partnerships between the department and international research and industrial companies. These initiatives are directly aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 4, 9, and 17) within the QS Sustainability and THE Impact ranking frameworks.
