Kazakhstan's way to a nuclear-free world

A round table "Kazakhstan way to a nuclear-free world" with the support of the mission of the Department of public information of the UN in Kazakhstan was held at al-Farabi KazNU.  KazNU is a global hub for sustainable development initiative United Nations "Academic Impact", and is active, aimed at supporting ten internationally accepted principles of the UN relating to human rights, literacy, sustainability and conflict resolution.

 The round table was timed to the International day of peace and the struggle for the total elimination of nuclear weapons and the 26 th anniversary of the decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan to close the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site (SNTS).

The round table was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps, international organizations accredited in Kazakhstan, the immediate parties to the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site and the academic community.

The event was opened by the Dean of the faculty of international relations Sagyngali Aidarbayev. In his greeting speech Sagyngali Aidarbayev noted the importance of this event in anticipation of the International day of peace in the context of the activities of Kazakhstan as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Also with a greeting by the Chairman of the Public Fund "Poligon-29 August" Nurlan Boztayev, who spoke about the Foundatio's activities and encouraged the younger generation to the mainstream of nuclear non-proliferation. In this regard, Council of Political group Representation of the MFA RK in Almaty Almasha Arenova in her speech thanked the organizers and participants of the round table for this event and wished successful work and completed their performance with a wonderful, very touching verses of own composition devoted to the Kazakh victims of nuclear tests of the Semipalatinsk test site.

During the round table discussed such issues as the activities of Kazakhstan as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Kazakhsta's experience in promoting initiatives on nuclear disarmament, some aspects of cooperation with leading international organizations and countries on nuclear non-proliferation, as well as contemporary issues and prospects for strengthening non-proliferation and prohibition of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

The main speakers were the chief researcher at the Kazakhstan Institute for strategic studies under the President of Kazakhstan Georgy Dubovtsev and the representative of the National nuclear center of Kazakhstan Murat Akhmetov highlighted practical aspects of the problem of nuclear non-proliferation and the main difficulties of liquidation of consequences of nuclear tests of the Semipalatinsk test site after two decades of closure.

Other scientists also noted a number of parts of nuclear testing in Kazakhstan indicating the need for the development of research within the domestic and international expert community.

Summing up, the head of the Department of public information of the United Nations in Kazakhstan Vlastimil Samek thanked all participants for fruitful work and noted the role of KazNU. al-Farabi as the UNAI hub.
