During the winter school, the Department of the Far East of the Faculty of Oriental Studies received guests from the University of Tokyo, organizing a rich program of meetings and seminars.
The honorary delegation, which was welcomed by the Department of the Far East, included professors Tonomura Masaru and Okada Terue with undergraduates and doctoral students from the University of Tokyo (The University of Tokyo). This university is one of the leading universities in the world in the QS ranking.
The seminar “Multiculturalism in Japan” was very meaningful. Presentations by students from Tokyo University aroused great interest and lively response. During the discussion, participants shared their views. The meeting was held in a warm and informal atmosphere.
The work of the Department of the Far East, including the Department of Korean Studies and Japanese Studies, pays great attention to the development of these two areas. Professor Tonomura Masaru devoted many years to studying the characteristics of the culture and language of the Korean people. His current focus is on a study of Koreans living in Japan. He is fluent in Korean and Japanese, so he spoke with students and faculty in two languages.
The meeting with colleagues from Tokyo is a significant event in the life of the department, since for the first time issues of interpenetration and enrichment of two languages and cultures were raised.
During the visit, guests visited the KazNU campus, the editorial board of Koryo Ilbo, the Association of Koreans of Kazakhstan and other organizations.
