Scientists of Al-Farabi KazNU took part in the XXII Mendeleev Congress on General and Applied Chemistry.

The Congress has been held since the beginning of the 20th century and is a unique platform for sharing knowledge and discussing the latest achievements in chemistry. Gathering the best scientists from all over the world, the Mendeleev Congress has a direct impact on the development of chemical science and its applications in various fields. This year about four thousand specialists took part, including more than 200 international participants from 39 countries.

The Congress was timed to coincide with two important anniversaries: the 190th anniversary of the birth of the great chemist Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev and the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The event brought together leading scientists, academicians, representatives of educational and scientific institutions, as well as representatives of industry.
From Kazakhstan, the congress was attended by laureates of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan: Professor of the Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Doctor of Technical Sciences Azhar Bayeshova, and Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Abduali Bayeshov.

Professor A.K.Baeshova made a presentation on ‘Catalytic reduction of selenate ions from waste solutions and wastewater in the presence of titanium (IV) ions’. The report touched upon important issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular, the topic ‘Responsible Production and Consumption’. The presentation proposed new methods for selective extraction of the valuable element selenium from multi-component waste solutions and wastewater, which are usually discarded and selenium is irretrievably lost.
The event ended with a final plenary report by Academician Yu.A.Zolotov, who summarised the results and outlined the prospects for further development of chemical science.
