KazNU's 90th anniversary was celebrated at a high level
A solemn meeting dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University was held at the Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theater named after Abai.
The event was attended by State Counsellor of the Republic of Kazakhstan Erlan Karin, Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sayasat Nurbek, mayor of Almaty Erbolat Dosayev, Chairman of the Board-Rector of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University Zhanseit Tuimebayev, foreign guests, university rectors, government and public figures, faculty and students.
An exhibition of innovative projects dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the University was organized as part of the solemn meeting. Information about the scientific potential and international relations of KazNU was presented to the visitors. The exhibition showed the results of innovative projects conducted by researchers in petrochemistry, IT, medicine, artificial intelligence, biology, physics, space technology, geography.
Today, 7 scientific research institutes, 140 scientific laboratories, 34 scientific centers and 2 laboratories for collective use are successfully operating on the basis of KazNU. The university implements more than 400 projects totaling 36 billion tenge. As part of the 90th anniversary, the most powerful supercomputer in Central Asia was installed at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, and the Center for Engineering Competence in Industrial Robotics was established. In a significant year for the university, the Farabi Hub Center for Innovative products and high-tech projects was built. The new facility with an area of 5,000 square meters will become a platform for the creative industry, artificial intelligence and the implementation of startup projects.
After the exhibition, the event continued with a solemn meeting. The guests were shown the historical documentary "Farabi-90".
At the solemn meeting, Chairman of the Board-Rector of KazNU Zhanseit Tuimebayev focused on the results and achievements of the university's research and innovation activities.
"Today is of great historical significance not only for the university, but for the whole country. Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted: "Now is the time for science and education. If we want our Homeland to prosper, we must first develop these two industries". The university staff is working tirelessly towards this task set by the Head of State. At the moment, the university successfully employs 3,265 teachers and professors. The university holds a leading position in terms of the number of scientific articles published in highly rated journals. Every sixth article (17.4%) published in Scopus in 2024 belongs to KazNU scientists. Of the 150 people who received the title of "Best educator" in the republic in 2024, 24% are representatives of KazNU. Today, in accordance with the instructions of the President, we have started the implementation of the second stage of construction of the KazNU campus. This is an important project aimed at improving the situation of our teachers and students. The university staff always focuses on the President's words in their work: "We need to be among the countries that start the trend, not follow it", - said the rector.
At the anniversary event, Erlan Karin read out a congratulatory letter from President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
"Congratulations to all of you on the 90th anniversary of the founding of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. This is a significant milestone in the field of education and science as a whole. Kazakh National University is one of the first higher educational institutions in the country. Over almost a century, the 'Karashanyrak' of KazNU has become a center of fundamental knowledge. It is a forge of qualified specialists and has formed its own unique traditions. On its anniversary, the university celebrates great achievements. A vivid confirmation of this is that KazNU leads prestigious international rankings among universities in the Central Asian region. I express my sincere gratitude to the university staff, who engage students in science and knowledge, instilling in them the qualities of an honest citizen", - reads the President's congratulatory message.
In his speech, Erlan Karin noted that for 90 years, the university, being a center of higher education and science, has been systematically working to train qualified personnel in various fields. The State Counsellor highly appreciated the work of the university's scholars in advancing domestic science.
"Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is under the constant attention of the Head of State. In recent years, significant efforts have been made to develop the university’s activities. Two years ago, the university was granted the status of a 'research university.' This is a major achievement and a high indicator. Following the President’s instructions, the second stage of the development of the KazNU campus began. New dormitories, academic buildings, and an innovation center will be built. The campus, which the public calls 'KazNUgrad,' is of great importance to the country. It can be considered 'a brand of Almaty, a symbol of an entire era'", - said Erlan Karin.
In conclusion of his speech, Erlan Tynymbayevich awarded university staff with state decorations and handed over the keys to apartments to young scientists.
On behalf of the university’s faculty, professor of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies, Eleonora Suleimenova, delivered a speech.
"Today, KazNU is a serious competitor to the best universities in the world, asserting itself with dignity in international rankings. We are experiencing a real Renaissance era, and we are rapidly and qualitatively being updated. This applies not only to the strengthening and renovation of existing infrastructure, but also to scientific achievements, the introduction of new high-tech products, as well as educational programs and academic success. The strategic objectives for the development of KazNU as a world-class research university are being confidently implemented and will become a worthy contribution to the socio-economic development of Kazakhstan", - the professor said.
The solemn meeting continued with a specially organized concert program dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
