Sorting and Recycling of Solid Household Waste

9 march, 2025

On March 9, 2025, as part of their pedagogical practice, first-year doctoral students of the "8D05301-Chemistry" program from the Department of Chemistry and Technology of Organic Substances, Natural Compounds, and Polymers – Madenova A.E., Zhurgat G., Bakytjan Z., and Ensegenova organized an educational event for first- and second-year bachelor's students of the "6B05301-Chemistry" program. The theme of the event was "Sorting and Recycling of Solid Household Waste" (supervised by Ph.D., senior lecturer Litvinenko Yu.A.).

The goal of this event was to introduce students to the concept of "green economy" and the principles of environmental protection, as well as to raise awareness about the importance of proper waste management and reduction. Special attention was given to fostering a respectful attitude towards human health and the environment as a whole.

During the event, key issues were discussed related to waste sorting and recycling methods using environmentally safe technologies in Kazakhstan. These topics directly relate to three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being – the event contributed to improving the quality of the environment, which in turn has a direct impact on public health and the development of environmentally responsible behavior among students;
  • SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities – the discussion on waste sorting and recycling was an important step in reducing pollution and creating cleaner, more sustainable cities;
  • SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production – the event focused on waste reduction, rational resource use, and the implementation of environmentally safe recycling methods.

Thus, this event made a significant contribution to shaping students' conscious approach to environmental protection, improving health, and promoting the sustainable use of resources.
