The mountain regions of Tien Shan and Altai were important centers of exchange between the eastern and western steppe cultures. The structure of the cultures of the Tien Shan and Altai regions during the Early Iron Age is discussed, with special attention given to the cultural situation in the Xinjiang region during the 1st millennium BCE. Based on this, the formation of early nomadic states and the origins of the Pazyryk culture are examined.
