The history of the chair of philosophy has its origins in 1949. This year the chair was separated from the university-wide department of the foundations of Marxism-Leninism, which existed at the University since its foundation in January 1934. Since 1971, an independent history of the Department of Social Philosophy begins, at that time it was called the Department of Philosophy for the faculties of humanitarian specialties. Since the 90s of the last century, the Kazakh philosophical community has known this structural unit of the university as the Department of Philosophy and Methodology of Social Cognition.

The department is developing a complex initiative topic related to innovations in philosophy, theory and methodology of socio-humanities and the renewal of socio-humanitarian education, which includes research: the philosophy of al-Farabi, socio-philosophical problems in modern Kazakh philosophy and philosophy of Islam; theory, history and research methodology of the national philosophy of culture; modern ethnic processes; problems of the modern educational process and harmonious personal development; history, theory and methodology of science in the field of paradigms of modern epistemological culture, social philosophy and philosophy of culture; theoretical and methodological problems of socio-humanitarian knowledge and innovative technologies in the educational process; the relationship between the philosophy of education and philosophical anthropology; metaphysics of the city; socio-philosophical analysis of youth policy in the Republic of Kazakhstan; theoretical and methodological analysis of the social structure of modern Kazakhstani society and analysis of the phenomenon of poverty in modern social philosophy; history of Kazakh socio-political thought in the context of socio-philosophical analysis of political processes and political thought; modern Western philosophy and social philosophy in the aspect of alternative cognitive systems; actual methodological problems of social philosophy and philosophy of history; developed the problem of the development of modern media technologies as a starting point in the analysis of modern culture.
