SHAIKHUTDINOV YERENGAIP MALIKOVICH

Yerengaip Malikovich Shaikhutdinov, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Engineering Academy of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the International Academy of Engineering, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Kazakh SSR, the country's largest scientist in the field of polymer science, recognized internationally, an outstanding teacher and organizer of higher education, major public figure.

Born on May 10, 1933 in the North Kazakhstan region. He graduated from school with a silver medal and entered the Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology named after M.V. Lomonosov (MIFCT). In 1956, MIFCT graduate Ye.M. Shaikhutdinov was assigned to the Karaganda plant of synthetic rubber, where he worked as a shift supervisor for about two years. However, an irresistible craving for science again led him to his native MIFCT, where, after successfully passing the entrance exams in 1958, he became a graduate student at this largest university in the Soviet Union.

At MIFCT the scientific interests and skills of Ye.M. Shaikhutdinov were formed under the influence of a prominent scientist, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences A.N. Bashkirov, under whose guidance he successfully defended his candidate dissertation in the field of kinetics and mechanism of liquid-phase oxidation of branched hydrocarbons. Sustainable continuous scientific connections with the “alma mater” are one of the key components of the creative path of Ye.M. Shaikhutdinov. It is no coincidence that in 2003 he was awarded the title “Honorary Professor of MIFCT named after M.V.Lomonosov".

After successfully defending his dissertation in 1963, Yerengaip Malikovich was invited to Kazakh State University named after C.M. Kirov, to the Department of Chemistry of Macromolecular Compounds. Since then, all creative activity of Ye.M. Shaikhutdinov, no matter where he had worked, and no matter what positions he had occupied, was inextricably connected with this department, where he went from teacher to the head of the department.

Under the leadership of B.A. Zhubanov and Ye.M. Shaikhutdinov at the department research in the most important areas of polymer chemistry were begun: polymerization, polycondensation, chemical modification of polymers, polymer solutions. This contributed to the formation of a broad scientific outlook for future specialists – graduates of the department.

Academician Ye.M. Shaikhutdinov is rightly called one of the founders of the chemistry of macromolecular compounds in Kazakhstan, who enriched the science of polymers with fundamental works of world class and paramount importance. He is responsible for the first research in the field of radical (co)polymerization of vinyl ethers.

At Kazakh State University, academician Shaikhutdinov created a scientific school in the field of chemistry and physics of functionalized hydrophilic polymers, which has received wide international recognition for its fundamental and applied research. It should be noted that according to the most recognized information databases in the scientific world, Clarivate Analytics (Thomson Reuters) and Scopus, three representatives of the scientific school of Ye.M. Shaikhutdinov (Mun G.A., Khutoryanskiy V.V., Nurkeyeva Z.S.) over the past 15 years have consistently occupied the first three positions in the world ranking of scientists in the field of interpolymer complexes. Such indicators have not been achieved by any scientific school not only in Kazakhstan, but throughout the CIS. Moreover, in the countries at the core of the world economy, there are only a few scientific schools whose representatives in any scientific field occupy the first three positions in the world rankings.

In 1978 Ye.M. Shaikhutdinov was appointed vice-rector, and in 1992 – rector of the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute named after V.I. Lenin (now KazNRTU named after K.I. Satpayev), the flagship of engineering education in Kazakhstan. From 2001 until his very last days, he worked as a professor at the Department of Chemical Technology of Oil and Gas Processing at KazNRTU, and also, part-time, as a professor at the Department of Chemistry and Technology of Organic Substances, Natural Compounds and Polymers at al-Farabi KazNU.

Professor Ye.M. Shaikhutdinov is an outstanding teacher, a talented organizer of educational, methodological and educational work, an initiator of the introduction of a number of new professional forms and methods into the educational process. Working at KazPTI, he paid great attention to scientific and methodological work, material and methodological support for the educational process, its modernization, and expansion of the institute’s profile specialization. In 1978, with his participation, the “Comprehensive Quality Management System for the Training of Specialists” was developed and implemented, which was a set of enterprise standards regulating all types of university activities: educational, scientific-methodological, scientific-research, educational. This system made it possible to improve the quality of training of engineering personnel and was in demand by many universities in Kazakhstan and beyond.

Academician Ye.M. Shaikhutdinov actively participated in the socio-political life of the country. For many years he headed the Almaty City Council of Veterans, ensuring the implementation of the most important social functions of the city leadership in relation to representatives of the older generation – participants in the Great Patriotic War and the labor front. Member of the coordinating council of the Committee of War Veterans and the International Union “Commonwealth of Public Organizations of Veterans of Independent States”.

During his fruitful scientific, pedagogical and social activities, Academician Ye.M. Shaikhutdinov awarded with the Orders "Qurmet", "Parassat" and "Barys"; the medals "For valiant work", "Labor veteran", "Astana"; the Letters of gratitude of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev and the President of Russia D. Medvedev; the anniversary medals "To 10 years of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan” and “To 20 years of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan”; badge “For excellent success in work” of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the USSR; Certificates of honor from the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR and the Republic of Kazakhstan.
